Process
How do I tell a failing slate roof from a sound one?
The NSW Heritage Office's sheet says delaminated slates have a dull sound when struck, quite different from the clear ring of a sound slate. It also says slates in the gutter are often a sign of rusted nails, and that water stains appearing as thin streaks down the slates may be an early indication of nail failure. The sheet is dated March 1998, online edition 2004, and is NSW guidance.
What does heritage listing change?
Having a heritage listed property does not mean that it cannot be changed or improved. It means that any modifications need to be thoroughly assessed to make sure that the heritage characteristics of the property are not lost. Usually this means a careful approach to making changes and 'doing as much as necessary but as little as possible'. While a planning permit is usually required, some work is also exempt.
Timing
How quickly can someone get to me?
We cannot promise a time. It depends on the provider's bookings. Enquiries sent through the form are passed to a local provider, who contacts you directly.
Can a slate roof be worked on in any weather?
No source read for this site says. The provider decides on the day, so ask how the quote treats wet days.
Permits and approvals
Does replacing slates need planning approval?
It depends on the property. You will usually need to obtain planning approval for any use or development of the site, if your property is Heritage listed or contained within a Heritage Precinct under the Tasmanian Planning Scheme - Hobart. Some maintenance work is exempt from requiring a planning permit, but you will need to get advice from Council that is specific to your property.

Service area
Which suburbs do you cover?
Hobart. Three pages are written around City of Hobart statements: New Town, Hobart and Battery Point. The rest are covered on the same terms.
Do you do the work yourselves?
No. This site is run by a marketing company, which passes each enquiry to an independent local provider. The provider inspects the roof, quotes and does any work itself; we do none of it.
Thanks — we have your enquiry. Someone will be in touch shortly.
