Slate Roofing in New Town
City of Hobart's heritage FAQ describes the Tower Road precinct in New Town as including larger properties with single storey houses from the mid to late 19th century to World War ll, and the Springvale Avenue precinct as where the houses are from the Interwar and Post War period. If your house is in either, planning approval is usually needed.

Slate Roofing around New Town
The FAQ says: "The heritage precinct HOB-C6.2.34 Tower Road will be the area between New Town Road and west of the railway line and includes larger properties with single storey houses from the mid to late 19th century to World War ll." And: "The heritage precinct HOB-C6.2.35 Springvale Avenue is the area to the east of the railway line where the houses are from the Interwar and Post War period." The line is from City of Hobart's heritage FAQ, which describes the precincts as the draft Local Provisions Schedule draws them; whether that is what applies to a given property is for the City to say. It does not say that any particular house is inside the precinct or has a slate roof.
The two precincts name different house periods, so what a roof is and what it has been repaired with can differ between them. Ask the City whether the property is in either precinct before slates are stripped.

Permits and City of Hobart rules
Whether a roof job here needs planning approval is for City of Hobart to confirm: it says you will usually need approval for development of a heritage listed property or one in a Heritage Precinct, and that some maintenance is exempt.
